Genestealer Cult Armoured Sentinel conversion - Magitek Armour

I MADE A THING!

I've been horrible at blogging lately, but I promise you I HAVE been making Hobby progress and sharing it on my hobby Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/modernsynthesist/, as well as my hobby twitter: https://twitter.com/Mod_Synth

Heck, I even cross-post this stuff to Facebook, Tumblr, Flickr, and Pinterest, so, really, you can pick your poison.

Anyway, I haven't been sitting around on my hands, and I mean to post more on the old bloggerino soon, but for now, here are some photos of my latest creation, without all of the chin-wagging I normally do, which keeps me from actually posting blog posts!

It's an armoured sentinel for my Genestealer Cult force. I want to include sentinels since they give me the chance to create some mining mecha, which the Cult force is sadly lacking!

This one was inspired by Brother Pink suggesting he'd like to make some Magitek Armour, from Final Fantasy III / VI, using one of those lanky Ad Mech walkers.

Here's Magitek armour for reference:
And how it looks in-game:

I didn't see how he could do it with the model he suggested (the longstrider?), but as I considered the Ad Mech line, I realize the Kastellan Robots could very easily be converted into magitek armour! I bought the requisite robots for the idea, but I didn't get around to starting on the idea until this Thursday, during my office hours at the local Games Workshop. Here's how far I got:

...and then the idea sat like a stone in my mind all Friday. I couldn't stop thinking about it, and staring at the print of Terra from FF3 above my desk at work, thinking about how I just wanted to get back to the conversion.
So, come Saturday and Sunday, I got right back to it, and by Sunday night, I was done!

Here's what I came up with. First, the basic armour without weapons arms:

That one, arm-looking thing is the magnetized weapons mount.

You can see this is still 85% Kastellan, with some extra bits along the way from a sentinel/dread. The pilot is a Tempestus Scion head (which is 100% perfect for the Final Fantasy pilot), and the body is left over from a Dreamforge APC kit (the rebreather on his mask wouldn't fit with standard cult armour :(

And here are the arms, straight from Ork kits:

Since the sentinels have a wealth of weapons options, I thought this would be a good chance to take my first foray into magnetizing. I used a Lascannon as the basis for the magnetic mount, and here are all the options:

For my first expedition into magnetizing, I feel like it turned out rather well. All the guns don't sit perfectly, but they're all passably good.

And, all in all, I'm pretty happy with what I accomplished on the model. It's not PERFECT in terms of being 100% Magitek Armour, but it's a pretty damn good piece of mining mech. For my next mech, I'm going to be using the longstrider legs to put together an alternate Scout Sentinel!

For now, here's the Armoured Mech with the box he mostly came from:

  1. I have to admit I wasn't sold on this idea when I saw it on Twitter, but you've totally changed my mind. I love the effect of the skinny thighs and heavy shins. It very easily shifts it closer to the anime spectrum without going off the rails. The overall look is spot on, even if it's not 100% accurate to the source. I love it!

    1. Thanks Jeff! Glad I was able to sell you on it :D

I'm having trouble deciding whether I'm pleased with the design as is (minus the clown shoes. Need to fix the clown shoes), or whether I want to revise it when I convert up the next Kastelan to make it closer to the source material (mostly the pixelated shot of it in game; I don't love the modernized render).

The benefit of leaving it like this is that the conversion to make it happen is pretty easy!

  2. Looking awesome, Pinky! Especially with the reference, it makes even more sense... :D

    1. Thanks brother! The armour in the game is something you only get to use for the first like 20 minutes of play, but it is so awesome that I'm happy to have created it in life.

That being said, I don't think the design is perfect yet, so let me know if you have ideas about what I can do with the clown toes.

Also: POST ON YOUR BLOODY HOBBY BLOG! Do it for Pinky.

  3. Love it! The conversion is some awesome use of those bits. It's unfortunate that the sentinels don't have options for the close combat weapons, I'm pretty sure a rock drill and stone claw would be fitting within a cult version.

    1. Yeah, Joe. The conversion was built more out of love/interest in having a badass model than it was for practicality. I'm pretty sure the hit box on this one is 2x the actual armoured sentinel one, and the arms are only there to link it to the Cult's mining origin.

That being said, I have a mad idea of creating a Tyranid ally force, except monstrous creatures would be represented by mecha, and termagants by unwashed-masses-style hybrids. In that army, this model could probably serve as a Carnifex, which would give it PLENTY to do with those claws >:)

    2. That's a fantastic idea! Look forward to what you come up with for the other monsters as well then!

  4. I like it. It makes me think of a Goblin Woodcutter.

    1. I feel like I should recognize that reference, Spadgris, but I don't.

Do you have a link to an image of what you're referring to? The only Goblin thing it makes me think of is the massive Goblin armour from The Labyrinth.

  6. I am really impressed with this. It is an excellent nod to Final Fantasy without seeming out of place in the 40K universe, or seeming like a blatant design copy. The really thin thighs coupled with the large shins gives it a slightly wonky look that really reminds me of Final Fantasy. I feel like I would change the feet. I think they can stay pretty big, but I do not like how round and bulbous they are.

    1. Thanks Greg! I think I mostly just got lucky as most of the bits are ripped straight from the Robot kit. The only problem with the wonky design that his been pointed out to me is a resemblance to Doctor Robotnik from the Sonic games :P

I was going to fix the feet on this one, as they bug me, too (clown shoes, anyone?) but Brother Pink advise me to leave this one as is and fix the feet on the next one, which, knowing me and how I can languish in getting something right, is probably a good plan :D
